Envirothon NB Aquatics & Wildlife Workshop Builds Field Skills at UNB ForEM

Saturday, February 21, 2026, Envirothon NB teams came together at UNB ForEM for an engaging, hands-on Aquatics and Wildlife Training Workshop. Students from Leo Hayes High School, Stanley Consolidated School, and Saint Malachy’s Memorial High School participated in a full day of practical learning designed to strengthen their understanding of key ecological concepts ahead of the provincial Envirothon NB competition during May 3-4 at Mount Allison University.

Wildlife Session

The wildlife session, facilitated by Ducks Unlimited Atlantic, provided students with valuable field-based experience. Participants explored:

  • Habitat requirements and ecosystem relationships
  • Bird identification techniques
  • Wildlife identification using tracks, skulls, and pelts
  • Methods for aging deer by examining jawbones and teeth

By working directly with real specimens and materials, students gained practical skills that extend beyond textbook learning and reflect real-world wildlife management practices.

Aquatics Session

During the aquatics session, students examined watershed dynamics and water quality concepts, including:

  • How watersheds function within a landscape
  • The difference between point source and non-point source pollution
  • Stream order classification
  • Fish identification
  • An interactive “Water Detective” online activity to apply their knowledge

These exercises emphasized critical thinking and environmental problem-solving — core components of the Envirothon program.

Building Knowledge Through Experience

Workshops like this are central to the Envirothon model: experiential, team-based learning that connects students directly with natural resource professionals and applied environmental science.

Thank you to the students, teacher advisors, and facilitators who contributed to a successful and impactful day of learning.
